Substance Abuse Treatment

Substance abuse therapy—individual and or group— is the most commonly used form of treatment for drug and substance abuse.

At Miami Counseling Center  we treat  substance abuse  cases by the application of various behavioral therapies, including addressing a patient’s motivation to change, providing incentives for abstinence, building skills to resist drug use, replacing drug-using activities with constructive and rewarding activities, improving problem solving skills, and facilitating better interpersonal relationships.

Several facts must be understood when considering substance abuse therapy :

  • Addiction is a complex but treatable disease that affects brain function and behavior
  • No single treatment is appropriate for everyone
  • Effective treatment attends to multiple needs of the individual, not just his or her drug abuse
  • Remaining in treatment for an adequate period of time is critical

Participation in group therapy and other peer support programs during and following treatment can help maintain abstinence.

Medications are an important element of treatment for many patients, especially when combined with addiction counseling and other behavioral therapies. Therefore substance abuse counseling must be done in conjunction with other therapy forms, including medical supervision.
